Tarpaulins-Benefits and Uses

Mar 30

A tarp or tarpaulin is a big sheet of a specific material such as polyethylene or cotton that is used for multiple purposes both indoors and outdoors. Depending on the material used, there are poly tarps, vinyl tarps and canvas tarps available. Each tarp has unique properties depending on the material that it is made of, thus making different tarps useful for different fields and applications. Of these, poly tarps made of polyethylene, canvas tarps are built from cotton and Vinyl tarps are made from polyester either coated or laminated using vinyl. Tarps often have metal rings called grommets at the corners so they can be tied or nailed down to the ground. Tarpaulins come in a variety of sizes and colours, and custom made tarps are also available in non standard sizes.

Tarps can be used to protect a variety of things such as equipment, construction materials, wood and furniture, and vehicles such as cars and boats from weather, water, sunlight and such. Flame retardant tarps help protect equipment and furniture from fire. Tarps have many outdoor uses, and are often used to set up camping tents or cover hay in farms. Truckers use them to protect truck loads such as grain and timber from sun and rain. Another outdoor application is to cover playing fields to protect them from getting wet in rain. They also have many indoor applications and are used as gymnasium floor covers to protect the floor from scratches and damage, and also protect people in case of slips and falls.
